Republican Senator Ted Cruz called White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki a “mint brownie”, said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi rides a “broom”, and had a crowd of Conservative Political Action Conference attendees boo Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and chant ” Let’s go, Brandon.”
The Texas Republican cracked a few quips when he became a “philosopher” at the conference, telling those in attendance at the annual event that the nation was currently in a battle between “power and freedom.”
“These two are in fundamental conflict. We see it every day: vaccination demands against doctors and nurses, masks against kids at school, Spotify against Joe Rogan, GoFundMe against Canadian truckers,” he said.
“Justin Trudeau,” he said as the crowd roared. “Let’s pause for a second and note that this is the first time in recorded history that any Canadian has generated such a big reaction from any crowd on planet Earth,” said Cruz, who was born in Canada to an American mother.
Psaki held her press briefing Thursday during Cruise’s keynote and answered ‘s question in real time about the Peanuts character comparison.
“Don’t tell him I like mint so I don’t take it too insulting. Senator Cruz, I like Mint Patty. I’m a little tougher, so here it is,” she said.
Cruz, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, declined to comment on Russia’s deadly attack on Ukraine.
Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, in his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday, deployed several wisecracks, including calling White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki a “mint pie” but making no mention of Russia’s deadly attack on Ukraine.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said at a briefing Thursday that the Peppermint Patty dig (left) was not an insult. “Don’t tell him I like mint so I don’t take it too insulting,” she said.
Cruz had the CPAC crowd booing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over his fight with truckers, commenting: “Let’s pause for a second and note that this is the first time in recorded history that any Canadian has generated such a large reaction from any crowds on planet earth’
Cruz also relished the idea of the Republicans gaining control of Congress and replacing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. “And Nancy is going to get on her broom — okay, no, no, that’s not fair, that’s not fair — she’s going to get on her private jet called the USS Broom,” he said.
Instead, he was amazed to see the crowd.
“Thousands of patriots, and not a damn mask in sight,” Cruz said.
And he began a speech warning about the dangers of “big government.”
“Big government everywhere sucks. Business sucks. Big Hollywood, big universities – any centralized accumulation of power is fundamentally dangerous to individual freedom,” Cruz said.
He said that freedom is under threat because these organizations are “working together hand in hand.”
“Look what happened to Joe Rogan – Joe Rogan, Jan Psaki,” he said.
He waited for the reaction of the crowd.
“Come on, Jen Psaki is not being treated like Justin Trudeau?” he asked, and received these exclamations. “Peppermint Patty deserves love!”
Psaki praised Spotify — the music and podcast streaming service — for disclaiming responsibility on Rogan’s show after the host said he hadn’t been vaccinated and promoted unproven COVID-19 drugs like ivermectin.
Cruz said the answer was: “Break it up – break big technology into a million little pieces.”
Before completing his 18-minute performance, he moved on to the 2022 intermediate races.
A number of GOP candidates spoke at CPAC, which began on Thursday and runs through the weekend, with former President Donald Trump speaking in prime time on Saturday.
“Let me say one more thing: in January 2023, I look forward to walking down the hallway of the United States Capitol. And I came across a man in overalls. He’s got a screwdriver and he’s going to change the sign on Nancy Pelosi’s door,” Cruz said.
“And Nancy gets on her broom — okay, no, no, that’s not fair, that’s not fair — she’ll get on her private jet, call USS Broom and fly back to California, and we’ll send Chuck. Schumer returned to New York,” the Texas senator continued.
“And we’re going to tell Joe Biden that it’s 2025 and he’s just going back to Delaware,” he added.
Cruz predicted that “change is coming.”
“It’s powerful. Do you want to know how powerful? Find me one person on planet Earth who doesn’t know what “Let’s go, Brandon,” he said.
Cruz then left singing “Let’s Go Brandon”.
