USA came from behind this morning to win gold in the Snowboard Cross Mixed Team in dramatic style.

Veterans Nick Baumgartner and Lindsey Jacobellis had to use all their experience and skills to succeed in this jump and turn rollercoaster race.

Baumgartner, 40, and Jacobellis, 36, were by far the oldest team to compete in this most spectacular of snowboarding events.

But their insatiable thirst for victory forced them to overtake younger but extremely talented rivals from Italy and Canada.

And the couple, whose combined age is 76, couldn’t hide their joy when they won the gold when snowflakes fell at the Genting Snow Park in Beijing 2022 this morning.

Michigan’s Baumgartner is the oldest athlete to win an Olympic medal in any snowboarding event, and California’s Jacobellis is the second oldest. Earlier this week, she already won gold in the women’s snowboard cross.

Italy’s Omar Visintin and Michela Moioli won the silver medal, while Canada’s Eliot Grondin and Merieta Odin took bronze.

After the race, Baumgartner said that their victory should inspire everyone, regardless of age, not to give up on their dreams.

He said, “It’s never too late to take what you want from life and follow your dreams.

“You let yourself down if you leave too soon. It doesn’t matter how old you are.

“Our success at our age is a perfect example of this. I know that we both hope that our stories can inspire other people to go there.

– You have a chance at life. Live the life you want and don’t let anyone stop you, no matter how old you are. Hard work is the answer.

Jacobellis added: “It’s also the inner fire and belief in yourself, whether you’re trying to win a gold medal or improve your daily life.”

The 36-year-old actor joked that the couple were “80s kids”.

Baumgartner said their age and experience helped the pair change racing conditions after it started snowing.

He said, “That’s what it takes to be veterans… we’ve had so many rides under our belts that we have to ride so close to people and in these conditions.

“It doesn’t scare us because we’ve done it so many times.”
