Rust cinematographer Halina Hutchins’ family sues Alec Baldwin for wrongful death

The family of Rust cinematographer Halina Hutchins is suing Alec Baldwin in a wrongful death lawsuit after he accidentally killed her with a rifle shot to the chest.

The family of murdered cinematographer Galina Hutchins on Tuesday filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Alec Baldwin in connection with her death on the set of the low-budget western film Rust.

Baldwin was holding a revolver on set in New Mexico during rehearsal when it fired on October 21, 2021, killing Hutchins.

He claimed that it was Hutchins herself who asked him to point the gun directly behind the camera and at her armpit before he fired. Director Joel Souza was also injured during a shooting on the set of Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe.

Lawyer Brian Panish, representing Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, held a press conference to re-announce the lawsuit by Baldwin and “others on set safety whose reckless behavior and cost cutting led to the senseless, tragic death of Galina Hutchins, – he said.

Panish said his firm conducted an investigation that he said uncovered “numerous violations of industry standards” by Baldwin and other defendants cited in a complaint filed in New Mexico on Tuesday.

Baldwin said that on Hutchins’ instructions, he pulled back the hammer and that it fired when he let go. He said he didn’t know the pistol contained a live round.

Investigators have described “some smugness” in gun handling on the set of the western Rust. They have yet to face any charges and are working to determine where the live ammunition found on the set may have come from.
