“Russian warship, fuck you”: the last words of Ukrainian border guards on Snake Island

‘Russian warship, fuck you’: Last words of Ukrainian border guards defending Serpent’s Island – just 40 miles from the Romanian border in the Black Sea – before the Kremlin navy opened fire, killing all 13 of them when they refused to surrender

  • A contingent of soldiers, presumably 13 in number, was stationed on Snake Island.
  • It is located off the coast of Ukraine and Romania and was controlled by Ukraine.
  • The recording broadcast an ultimatum sent by Russian sailors to a nearby warship.
  • They warned the guards to surrender, “otherwise they will shoot at you”
  • The men defiantly refused, and they were all subsequently killed.

All Ukrainian border guards on duty on a tiny island in the Black Sea near Romania were killed on Thursday after ordering a Russian warship to “fuck off” when they were ordered to surrender.

A small contingent of military personnel, believed to be 13, was stationed on Zmeiny Ostrov in the Odessa region and defended the territory after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In a radio message to the soldiers, a sailor on board said: “This is a Russian warship.

‘[We] Invite you to lay down your arms and surrender to avoid bloodshed and unnecessary casualties. Otherwise, they will shoot you.”

However, the Ukrainian troops defiantly refused to surrender the territory and instead responded with a demonstrative message of “fuck off.”

Shortly thereafter, all were killed in aerial bombardment.

Late Thursday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the deaths of the soldiers.

There was also a video circulated on Twitter showing the moment of the shelling of the island.

On it, a Ukrainian soldier was looking at the camera before a shell exploded nearby.

Ukraine’s interior ministry said on Thursday afternoon that Zmeiny Island, also referred to as Serpent’s Island, was under attack by Russian forces.

The Serpent Island is of strategic importance because it will allow Russia to claim territorial waters that extend 12 nautical miles out to sea.

They cover important shipping routes to the port cities of Odessa, Nikolaev and Kherson.

By seizing the island, Russia could cut off shipping lanes, isolating Ukraine from international markets and depriving its economy of vital trade income as it tries to defend itself.
