Ice dancers Madison Chalk and Evan Bates have opened up about their love story and plans for a future wedding after helping Team USA win a silver medal at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, their third Olympics together.

The reigning U.S. champions, who also placed fourth in the free skate, opened up about their romance during an interview with Today host Jenna Bush Hager that aired on Valentine’s Day.

Chock, 29, and Bates, 32, both attended high schools outside of Detroit, Michigan and briefly dated as teenagers before they started skating together in 2011. They announced that they became a couple in 2017 after a year of dating.

“It wasn’t until we started riding together that we started spending a lot more time together and we developed this connection and this friendship that eventually blossomed into a romance,” Bates said.

Chock recalled how he picked her up in his mom’s red pickup truck and took her to dinner at Bahama Breeze in honor of her 16th birthday. He still remembers what she was wearing: a black dress and pink stilettos.

Their teenage romance fizzled out after a few dates, but skating together years later made them realize their feelings for each other hadn’t gone away.

“It took about five years before I really stepped forward, expressed my feelings and wanted to be more than a figure skating partner,” he shared. “When it finally happened… some of our friends around us were like, ‘Well, yeah.’

Chock added: I thought, “Oh yeah? It’s so interesting. I feel the same about you. Where did it come from? But he had to be there always.

“They said there are no plans yet, but there will be,” she said. “In fact, I tried to propose to them in the square.

Bates hasn’t proposed yet, but the couple told People they’ve discussed the wedding and wedding venues they like.

They don’t plan to say yes until they leave the world of competitive ice dancing.

“We’re not going to retire after the season,” Bates said. “We are still very passionate about figure skating. We still feel young and we still feel like there is room for improvement and growth.

“And I keep hearing about the four Games and that I’m one of the oldest skaters. And I’m like, “How did this happen?” I don’t feel as experienced as it sounds.”

Chock added, “When we do decide to retire, we will definitely have a big celebration. And that will probably include a wedding.
