But despite it appearing on social media like their relationship has been picture perfect, the mom-of-four recently admitted that it wasn’t always as good as it seemed online.

Ahead of her husband’s Super Bowl debut, Kelly opened up about feeling ‘disconnected’ from the football player after he was first transferred to the Rams in 2021.

Kelly told USA Today that the quarterback called her one day and said, ‘I feel like the last person on your list right now. I’m the last person that you come to. I’m the last person that you respond to.’

She said that at the time, she was feeling overwhelmed by the amount people who were texting her and asking if they could come visit or attend a Rams game.

‘It came to the point where I would look down at my phone and have 50-plus texts in an hour and some of those would be Matthew, and I would just put my phone back down,’ she recalled.

‘I wouldn’t make him a priority. I was just, like, “OK, you know what, we’ll be fine. He’s at work, he’s doing his thing, he’s going to come home, we’ll talk then.”

‘And just kind of like putting him on the backburner a little bit. So we were disconnected there for longer than I thought.

‘Everything seems beautiful and fun on the outside, right? But people struggle in their relationships all the time. And that was a moment of struggle for us.’

After their phone call, Kelly decided to lean on the wives of other football players on the team – including Melissa Whitworth, wife of Rams left tackle Andrew Whitworth, and Anna Kupp, wife of Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp – who gave her ‘the best’ advice.

‘Melissa was like, “You need to give that phone to somebody else. You need to get a new number, and you need to put the people who are most important to you on your personal [phone] and that other number can wait and you can go through that when you have time,”‘ said Kelly.

‘Honestly, it’s the best advice I’ve gotten. It’s been a game changer for me.

‘Because now when I look down at my phone, I have three texts, from Matthew and my mom, from people I love and people I want to respond to, need to respond to, rather than picking up my phone and saying, “I can’t do this,” and not to deal with it.

‘And we started setting up some boundaries for friends and family and everybody that wanted to come and visit and just really both of us made a very big attempt to make each other a priority.

‘Because we know as long as we’re good, our kids will be good, our life will move a little smoother than if we’re at odds.’

The couple met in college, when Matthew played quarterback for the University of Georgia, and Kelly was a cheerleader for the school.

She comes from a football family: Her older brother, Chad Hall, was an NFL receiver and is now the Buffalo Bills’ wide receivers coach.

The pair were together when Matthew was drafted first overall by the Detroit Lions in 2009 – with Kelly entering the workforce as a nurse – where he played until 2020.

Matthew proposed in 2014, and in 2015 the lovebirds tied the knot at the Foundry at Puritan Mill in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2016, they announced that they were expecting their first child together.

At the time, Kelly told ESPN: ‘You know, if I push on my belly too much, he’s like, “Stop. Stop.” I’m like, “It’s OK, they’re fine. I’m just trying to move them around in there a little bit.”

‘I think [fatherhood will] definitely change him. I think it’ll change anyone. I’m excited to see him as a dad. I know he’s going to be awesome.’

In April 2019, after the birth of three of their four daughters, Kelly shared some shocking news – she had a brain tumor and needed to get it surgically removed.

Then just 29, she revealed on Instagram that she’d been suffering months of vertigo spells before being diagnosed with a noncancerous mass known as an acoustic neuroma, which was sitting on a nerve that emerges directly from the brain.

‘I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t completely terrified of brain surgery. I am,’ she wrote at the time.

‘I am terrified of them opening my head, I’m terrified of losing my hearing, I’m terrified of losing facial function, I’m terrified of far worse things that could happen and I’m terrified that I won’t take the time I need to recover because the guilt I might feel of being absent from my kids for too long.’

Later that month, she underwent the 12-hour procedure, and recovery wasn’t easy. In September, Kelly revealed that she was still learning to walk properly again.

However, she continued to improve, and in March 2020, the couple announced that they were expecting their fourth child.

‘There’s been some long days and some tough times. But [I’ve had a] ton of help, ton of support, and a strong wife to help me out,’ Matthew gushed in 2019.

‘It was, and still is, incredibly impressive – just how she handled the whole thing. Not even going through the surgery and coming out of it and recovering, but inspiring a bunch of people along the way.

‘She’s an incredible role model to our girls and a bunch of little girls out there. She did an awesome job.

‘In a small, tiny way, I know how scary and frustrating injuries can be. And not knowing what’s going to happen when you come out of surgery.

‘But I can’t imagine having my skull cracked open and to just watch her go through that and how steady she was impressive.’
