Mckenna Mae, an Ohio girl who has battled cancer for most of her life, is on her dream vacation.

After her father refused to sign the Make-A-Wish consent form last month, family members raised money on their own to pay for the trip.

“It’s really exciting,” McKenna’s mother, Whitney Hughes, told Fox News Orlando. “It’s kind of a shock factor too.”

In 2010, McKenna was diagnosed with leukemia.

Last month, William May, the girl’s father, spoke out against a trip to Disneyland. He said that incurable children should go on vacation.

“I’m not saying she didn’t experience much,” he told Fox. “But maybe she should buy a swing or something.”

The Make-a-Wish Foundation initially gave the girl, who lives in Haskins, Ohio, $3,500 (£2,235) to fund the holiday.

The Make-a-Wish Foundation’s policy requires the signature of two parents to prevent marital problems or custody battles.

Mark Hiegel, the foundation’s director of national communications, told Fox he had never heard of a parent denying a vacation because the child was “too healthy.”

To raise the necessary funds, two of McKenna’s nephews sold popsicles. Another boy sold $500 worth of chocolate bars to pay for his vacation.

A wish come true: McKenna May will meet Mickey Mouse and eat a lot of ice cream during her visit to Disney.

Jamie’s Dream Team, a Pennsylvania-based non-profit organization that helps those with disabilities, serious illnesses or injuries, is sponsoring McKenna’s trip.

“I believed it would (happen),” Hughes said. But I didn’t think it would happen so quickly.
