A homeless man has been charged with aggravated assault after he slit the throat of a Utah woman who opened her home for him so he could shower.

Eric Jones, 30, allegedly assaulted an unidentified woman last Sunday in her Salt Lake City apartment in what police say is a “random assault.”

When police arrived at her apartment, the victim, whose identity was not released due to a request for privacy, was “bleeding profusely”.

According to the press service of the police, she was taken to the district hospital in critical condition and underwent an emergency operation. Doctors have since lowered her condition to stable.

Jones was arrested early Friday morning about two miles from the scene of the attack. He was taken to the Salt Lake County Metro Jail and charged with one count of aggravated assault.

Salt Lake City officers responded at 850 West Temple Street shortly before 5:00 pm on Sunday, February 6, to a report of a bleeding woman.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the woman invited Jones, whom she called “homeless”, to her residence to take a shower.

It remains unclear if Jones knew the victim prior to the incident.

Salt Lake City detective Michelle Mehling told Fox 13 that the suspect, later identified as Jones, attacked the woman and fled the scene.

The police provided first aid to the victim at her home until paramedics managed to take her to the hospital.

After the incident, Mechling warned residents: “It is in line with the principle – know who you let into your house and do not let strangers into your house.”

According to prisoner records, Jones currently remains in prison. His bail is set at $10,000.
