Hoda Kotb says she writes a ‘special note’ to her daughters Hailey and Hope every morning

Hoda Kotb said she starts each day by writing a love note to her daughters Haley Joy, five, and Hope Katherine, two, before heading off to work.

The Today star opened up about her touching morning ritual on Thursday’s show after her co-host Jenna Bush Hager revealed how she “always admired” the gesture.

“Every morning I write them a special note with a photo,” explains Kotb, 57. “I draw a little picture where the two of them are doing something.”

The journalist, who gets up at 3 am before going to the studio, admitted that her paintings are not always easy to draw.

“Sometimes in the morning I google ‘how easy to draw hugs’,” she joked, but her daughters clearly appreciated her artistic abilities.

“Hope always screams: “It’s me! It’s me!” She recognizes herself and what they do,” Kotb explained. “And Hailey reads these words [I wrote].’

Bush Hager has two daughters of her own—Mila, eight, and Poppy, six—and she can imagine how eagerly the little Kotba girls must look forward to her notes.

Kotb explained that her baby Hope recognizes herself in the pictures, while her oldest daughter Hayley reads the words.

“Every single day they know their mother gives them a minute,” said the former first daughter, who also has a two-year-old son, Hal.

Bush Hager was so touched by the thought of Kotb’s daughters receiving handwritten messages every morning that she burst into tears.

“How wonderful that your little girls wake up every morning with someone who sees them?” she asked through tears. “That’s exactly what we can all hope for.

Earlier this week, Kotb shared a video of herself celebrating Valentine’s Day with Hailey and Hope after getting a surprise from her sister.

When they entered their house, they were greeted with a bunch of balloons, including a heart and a unicorn.

“When you get home from a long appointment with the girls ophthalmologist – and see what awaits at home!” she signed the video on Instagram. “Valentine’s Day Surprise, courtesy of my sister Hala!”

Kotb recently split from her longtime partner Joel Schiffman, 63, with whom she has adopted daughters Hailey and Hope. Earlier this month, she announced on the show that they had broken up after eight years together.

“Joel and I prayed a lot and had meaningful conversations over the holidays, and we decided we were better as friends and parents than as an engaged couple,” she said.

“So we have decided that we will start this new year on our new path as loving parents to our adorable adorable children and as friends.”

Kotb insisted that there was no enmity between them after the break.

“It doesn’t look like anything has happened,” she added. “They say sometimes a relationship has to be for a reason, for a season or for life, it was for a season.”

The journalist spoke about their breakup after Bush Hager pointed out that she was not wearing a wedding ring.

She explained that it was “weird and embarrassing” to talk about it in public, but she wanted to focus on the “joyful moments” they shared together.

“Many women know what it is like to change the course of life. I feel like I’m really breathing at this moment, and it’s a strange feeling. Sometimes in life you have to tell the truth,” she said.
