Senator Bernie Sanders once again backed fellow progressive Jessica Cisneros in her bid to remove incumbent Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar.

“Jessica knows that real change comes from the bottom up, not the top down,” Sanders said on Monday. “She will fight for the working class in Congress, and together we will build a movement to transform this nation to work for the good of all of our people.”

Cisneros, a 28-year-old immigration attorney, hopes to unseat Cuellar, a moderate Democrat who opposes abortion rights, in the March 1 Texas primary for the 28th congressional district.

It has already received endorsement from members of the “team” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jamaal Bowman and Ayanna Pressley, as well as Senator Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Kathy Porter and former Texas State Senator Wendy Davis.

At a rally Saturday in support of Cisneros and Greg Casar, another Texas Democratic primary candidate, Ocasio-Cortez said, “The blue of Texas is inevitable.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has already backed Jessica Cisneros in the race, along with two other “squad” members and Senator Elizabeth Warren. On Saturday, she campaigned for the Cisneros in San Antonio.

“It will only happen when,” the New York Democrat said.

Republicans insist that the ongoing border crisis will keep the large border state red.

Sanders also backed Cisneros in her 2020 bid against Cuellar, where she came within 3,000 votes of ousting a moderate Democratic congresswoman first elected in 2004.

He timed his approval on Monday to coincide with the start of early voting in the primary race.

Not only did Cisneros have Sanders’ support, but the Vermont progressive was at the top of the list — and still a viable presidential candidate during the Texas primary on Super Tuesday.

This dynamic has put Cisneros at arm’s length from the longtime MP in 2020, according to one of Cuellar’s top allies.

“The only thing she had was Bernie,” Colin Strother, Cuellar’s longtime aide, told the Texas Observer in November.

This time, Strother said, Queller would win “by a mile.”

However, in mid-January, the FBI raided Cuellar’s home and campaign headquarters in Laredo, Texas.

It remains unclear what the FBI was looking for, other than that the agents were “conducting court-sanctioned law enforcement activities,” but Cuellar said the investigation “will show there was no wrongdoing on my part,” according to CNN.

“Let me be clear: I am running for re-election and I intend to win,” Cuellar also said in a video message released shortly after the raids.

The Cuellar Cisneros primary could also serve as a test of how abortion rights motivate voters in the 2022 midterms.

The Observer noted that during the 2020 primaries, Cuellar attacked Cisneros for being pro-choice.

But as Texas enacts one of the strictest abortion laws in the nation, banning the procedure after just six weeks, Cisneros’ stance may be more acceptable to Democratic primary voters.

Even with the Republican-led redistricting, the 28th remains a favorable date for Democrats and is not expected to be a GOP peak as the Republicans appear poised to regain control of the House.
