Applebee apologizes for the light-hearted ad that was shown during CNN’s coverage of the Ukraine invasion

Applebee’s pulled its ad from CNN after a very light-hearted video was shown on the network promoting a restaurant menu against the backdrop of a live feed of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The commercial aired on Thursday morning after hosts Bianna Golodriga and Jim Sciutto gave viewers an update on how Russian troops attacked several Ukrainian cities, airports and military installations.

In preparation for the commercial break, the network aired a live broadcast from Kiev, where viewers could hear the sirens of the raid.

While the ceremonial scene was airing, an Applebee advertisement was shown on the network advertising five boneless wings for $1 with a hamburger purchase while the Zac Brown Band Chicken Fried hit was playing. The scene from Kiev was still shown in the lower left corner of the screen.

“We are deeply concerned about the situation in Ukraine. When we became aware that our ads had been placed in this way, we immediately contacted CNN to suspend our ads on their network,” Applebee spokesman Marty Swant told Forbes. “This should never have aired and we are disappointed with the network’s actions.”

Neither Applebee nor CNN immediately responded to ‘s request for comment.

“One day a friend yelled out the opening lyric of Smash Mouth’s “All Star” in a movie theater during a silent moment in a drama film as a challenge. This is worse than that moment,” repeated radio show host Arash Markazi.

“Maybe I want to talk to CNN about running your ad, @Applebees,” Kentucky Senator Whitney Westerfield wrote.

“Applebees couldn’t get Super Bowl ads, so they took over CNN’s spot on World War 3. Savage,” said Twitter user @VeryBlesseth.
