The separation of Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley did not come as a surprise to those close to the former star couple.
Insiders close to the 38-year-old Green Bay Packers quarterback and the 30-year-old Big Little Lies actress spoke to People in an article published Thursday following the couple’s split more than a year after they announced their engagement.
The NFL’s top player and Divergent star “fell hard and fast, but it was a mismatch from the start,” a source told the publication. “No one in their circle is surprised it didn’t work.”
Last: Aaron Rodgers, 38, and Shailene Woodley, 30, broke up as no surprise to the former celebrity couple’s confidants, as several sources have detailed relationship problems since their split.
An insider said of the couple, who first started dating in July 2020, “In the pandemic bubble, it was easy for them to fall in love and only focus on their relationship, but that’s not real life.”
A source noted that “Aaron is a tough guy” following the NFL season in which Rodgers earned his fourth MVP award, the second most in league history.
A separate insider close to the football star told the publication on Wednesday that the couple’s split was amicable as the relationship “just wasn’t working out.”
“They are very different people with rich careers and there were obstacles they couldn’t overcome. They will remain friendly; no bad blood and no drama. It just didn’t work for them.”
The former couple was spotted on vacation at Walt Disney World in Florida last year.
Woodley was spotted in March 2020 in Paris during Paris Fashion Week.
Sources told US Weekly on Thursday that Rodgers and Woodley “of course had their differences and ultimately didn’t work out.”
“In the beginning, they thought they were right for each other, but the more they got to know each other, the better they understood their careers, their interests. [and] their political views did not coincide.”
Woodley has attracted attention in the past for her environmental activism, including her 2016 arrest in Standing Rock, North Dakota, in connection with a protest against the Dakota Access pipeline.
The source also cited Rodgers’ focus on his NFL career as a problem, stating that the quarterback was “focusing more on sports than plans for the future with Shailene.”
Earlier this month, Rodgers received his fourth MVP award, which is the second highest in league history.
Rodgers made headlines in November when he missed a game after testing positive for COVID-19 due to misleading remarks about his vaccination status, as he said he was “vaccinated” last summer. In January, Rogers criticized President Joe Biden for his administration’s response to the pandemic.
The source also cited Rodgers’ focus on his NFL career as a problem, stating that the quarterback “focused more on sports than plans for the future with Shailene.”
Woodley was also “very busy with work” prior to the split, a source told the publication on Wednesday, adding that “things were so different during lockdown and they were living in their own bubble.”
In January, an insider told People that the couple decided to “agree to disagree” on certain topics and avoided talking about political issues.
